Specification clauses are used to dictate exactly how a contractor will deliver the requirements of good practice. They are also used to describe how best practice, such as The ICE Demolition Protocol, will be implemented.
A number of clauses are described in this module and can be downloaded from the National Green Specification (NGS) website (note that some are still under development). Through the NGS, the clauses will remain compatible with current National Building Specifications (NBS). Clauses are numbered to indicate where they should be integrated into current NBS work sections. Where no current NBS section exists, NGS will maintain their section and bring it into line with any future NBS section(s).
Clauses are summarised below, with links to the specification preliminaries or trade work sections.
Demolition Preliminaries: translating a planning requirement related to the Demolition Protocol into contract requirements for the Demolition and/or Construction contracts. Where the clauses are compatible with NBS Preliminaries Section A60: NGS GreenSpec A60 Demolition/Deconstruction & Resource Recovery.
Demolition Specification: where the clauses are compatible with NBS trade work section C20 Demolition: NGS GreenSpec C20 Demolition/Deconstruction Resource Recovery.
Pre-demolition and Pre-refurbishment Audit Specification: for site surveys (NGS C10), ground investigation (NGS C11), underground service survey (NGS C12), building fabric survey specification (NGS C13) and building services survey (NGS C14).
Refurbishment and Alteration Specifications: for the removal of materials for disposal and recovery of materials for reuse and recycling: NGS GreenSpec C91 Alteration - Resource Recovery & Waste Minimisation. These will be maintained by NGS and made compatible with any future NBS work sections (e.g. C21 Toxic/Hazardous Material Removal; C90 Alteration – Spot Items etc.).
Construction (and Demolition) Waste Minimisation/Management Preliminaries: NGS GreenSpec A38 Construction Waste Minimisation/Management which is complimentary with C20 & C91 trade specifications.
Reuse of Salvaged Materials: for the reuse of recovered materials in new-build, or refurbishment / alteration / extension to existing buildings. NGS clauses are being developed for use throughout many work sections with the help of Architectural Salvage and Construction Reclaim specialists.
Use of Recycled materials and Recycled Construction Products: for use in new-build and refurbishment / alteration / extension to existing buildings. 350 clauses for Recycled Construction Products (for use throughout many trade work sections) have been added to the NGS website - a total of 1,920 Recycled Materials and Products have been identified so far.
