Government Sustainability Indicators

How does the Government Measure Sustainability?

To support the UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy there is a suite of 68 national sustainable development indicators.  These include 20 UK Framework Indicators, which are shared by the UK Government and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

All 68 indicators in the strategy fall into one or more of four priority areas:

  • Sustainable consumption and production;
  • Climate change and energy;
  • Natural resource protection and enhancing the environment; and
  • Creating sustainable communities and a fairer world.

Environmental Key Performance Indicators (EPIs) for the Construction Industry
More specifically for the construction industry, the Construction Best Practice programme developed in 2003 a range of EPIs for the construction industry, several of which take the use of recycled and secondary aggregates into account.

The more relevant EPIs refer to 'Waste' and 'Transport'. The full suite of EPIs can be found at the Constructing Excellence website.
