CO2 Emissions Estimator Tool

The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions Estimator Tool for the use of aggregates in construction helps users to decide upon construction techniques and aggregate supply alternatives on the basis of the associated carbon dioxide emissions.

The tool focuses on giving an estimate of the carbon dioxide saved in selecting different alternatives for the same engineering application.

The tool uses Microsoft Excel and is designed to assess the carbon dioxide output resulting from four types of construction applications:

  • Bitumen bound;
  • Concrete;
  • Hydraulically bound; and
  • Unbound.

Users can also access the background calculations, where the carbon dioxide arising from different processes (e.g. embodied energies, transport, construction techniques) are estimated and the data used.

This enables users to:

  • Identify areas realising the major savings or contributing most to the overall emissions (e.g. transport modes and distances, and different technologies) and quantify the savings in carbon dioxide emissions; and
  • Introduce data on equipment and materials being used.

The tool is accompanied by a User Guide which provides:

  • Step by step instructions covering the inputs required to complete a carbon dioxide estimation;
  • Helpful tips and warnings on using the tool;
  • Assumptions and approximations used; and
  • Case study examples demonstrating carbon dioxide savings.

Additional case studies demonstrate the carbon dioxide emissions savings made on a number of actual construction projects.
