For latest update on permiting and exemptions, please visit the Environmental Permitting page of the Environment Agency website.
If you are dealing with waste at your site (e.g.: storing it, sorting it, recycling it...), you will either need to obtain an environmental permit, or to register the activities being undertaken there as exempt from the requirements of the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 (the EP Regulations). Some transitional provisions apply to existing activities, while for new activities, and existing applications, transfers, variations, surrenders etc. not yet determined, the 2010 EP Regulations apply already.
This section contains information on permits, including how to apply, the available types, the corresponding charges, and on registration of exemptions. Information on the applicability of new exemptions and permits has been organised within the WMR Step by Step Tool by waste stream.
